Straight answers about living with unlacquered brass — sizing, patina, care and fit.
Yes — and that is the point. Unlacquered brass has no protective coating, so the bare metal reacts with air, moisture and the oils on your hands. It is a living finish, not a defect.
These pulls ship mirror-polished. In a working kitchen, the first warm amber tones usually appear within a few weeks of daily handling; a deeper, mottled antique patina develops over several months to a year. Pace depends on use, not time alone — a busy kitchen darkens far faster than a guest bath, and the areas your fingers touch most will turn first while the edges stay bright. That uneven contrast is what people buy unlacquered brass for.
To stay bright: polish occasionally with a standard brass polish, then buff dry. Some owners apply a thin coat of paste or carnauba wax after polishing to slow oxidation — it delays the patina, it does not stop it.
To age faster: simply handle them and skip the polish. Leaving them untouched in a humid kitchen also accelerates the process.
Either way: the finish is reversible. Brass that has gone dark can be polished back to bright at any time, because the colour is surface oxidation on solid metal — there is no plating to wear through.
Center-to-center is the distance between the middles of the two mounting holes — not the overall length of the pull. Measure from the centre of one screw hole to the centre of the other on your drawer front. If the existing holes measure 3" (76mm) or 5" (128mm), these drop straight in with no new drilling.
Overall length runs longer than the hole spacing, so check your drawer width too:

Solid brass throughout — not zinc alloy or steel with a brass coating. You can confirm it yourself: solid brass feels heavy for its size (3.1 oz / 87g for the 3" pull, 4.2 oz / 121g for the 5"), is non-magnetic, and rings rather than clunks when tapped.
The distinction matters most over time. A plated pull looks similar on day one, but once the micron-thin brass layer wears through at the contact points, the base metal shows and cannot be restored. Solid brass simply keeps ageing.

Usually not on its own. A typical mid-size kitchen runs 8–12 drawers plus 10–20 doors, so most remodels order several packs, and many buyers mix sizes — 3" CC on shallow drawers and upper doors, 5" CC on deep pot drawers and appliance-adjacent fronts.
Because brass is a living finish, order everything you need in one go. Pulls installed a year apart will sit at different stages of patina until the newer ones catch up.
Warm water and mild soap on a soft cloth, then dry. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders and harsh chemical cleaners — they scratch the polished surface and strip patina unevenly, which is much harder to correct than either extreme.
Skip the wipe-down entirely if you want the patina to build. Cleaning is about grime, not colour.
